The Little Read: Discover Arts Award

Take part in a free and fun family activity to inspire children about art.

The Discover Arts Award offers an exciting activity for children and families to do at home. This year’s award is all linked to the brilliant picture book, Greta and the Giants, which is the Durham Book Festival Little Read 2020.

1700 free copies of Greta and the Giants have been sent to every primary school and nursery in the county, as well as childminders and looked-after children. You can also find the book in County Durham libraries.

What is the Discover Arts Award?

The Discover Arts Award is an award aimed at children aged five and upwards. It gives children the chance to try out an art form, find out about an artist, and share what they have learned. The booklet on this page and its related videos have been designed for you to support your child to achieve a Discover Arts Award at home.

On successful completion, children can earn a Discover certificate by sending their booklet to New Writing North for assessment (optional).

Please download the booklet for guidance on how to use these resources.
