Little Read 2021

Each year, our Little Read campaign gifts thousands of picture books across County Durham, including to every primary school and nursery setting, inviting children to read for pleasure and be part of a shared moment for the county. As well as events at the festival, you’ll find workshops and resources which can be used at home or in school to engage with the story. We hope you find a moment to enjoy reading and sharing a story together!

Join in by sending us pictures inspired by this year’s Little Read using #DBFLittleRead on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Look Up! By Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola

We’re thrilled that The Little Read 2021 will be the awesome picture book, Look Up! by Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola.

Winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2020, Look Up! is a heart-warming picture book about space and the wonder of the natural world. Rocket’s going to be the greatest astronaut, star-catcher, space-traveller that has ever lived! But… first, she needs to convince her big brother Jamal to stop looking down at his phone and start LOOKING UP at the stars. We hope this beautifully illustrated story will inspire you to turn off those screens and enjoy the outside world!

We will be distributing 2000 copies of Look Up! throughout County Durham, including one copy to every nursery and primary school in the County. From September you will be able to download free resources and workshops inspired by the book, including some developed with Education Durham and Durham University.

The Little Read 2020 Greta and the Giants

In 2020 our Little Read was Greta and the Giants by Zoë Tucker and Zoe Persico.

Greta and the Giants is a beautifully illustrated and ultimately hopeful picture book that retells the story of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunberg for very young children, inspiring them to believe that no-one is too small to make a difference. We distributed 1700 copies of this inspiring picture book throughout County Durham. You can still access all of our digital workshops and teachers’ resources on this page.
