Our Little Read this year is Polonius the Pit Pony, a charming picture book by Richard O’Neill. Join Richard in Clayport Library and hear him tell Polonius’ story at this free drop-in event.

When Polonius the pit pony escapes from the coal mine he’s worked in all his life, he joins a family of Travellers. Although he enjoys the freedom and the fresh air that their lifestyle offers, he wishes he could give something to the family in return. When the chance arrives for him to do something to help,Polonius uses his skills to save the day.

Richard O’Neill is an internationally acclaimed storyteller, author and playwright. Born into a fully nomadic Romani Gypsy family, travelling throughout the North of England and Scotland, his roots are also to be found in the coal-mining communities of the North East. This co-cultural upbringing is reflected in his creative work, and Polonius the Pit Pony brings together both cultures.

Durham Book Festival will be distributing a free copy of Polonius the Pit Pony to every primary school in County Durham.
