Join Professor Alec Ryrie in looking at some of the books that cemented atrocity-narratives into our history, including tales of religious persecutions in Tudor England and imagined atrocities like the Gunpowder Plot.

Durham’s exceptional collections of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books, many of them illustrated, provide us with a vivid window on how these moments of violence became immortalised.

Alec Ryrie is an award-winning author and Professor of Christianity at Durham University. His new book Unbelievers: An Emotional History of Doubt will be published in late Autumn 2019.
