Chris Mullin, festival favourite and acclaimed author of the widely acclaimed memoir Hinterland, returns to Durham to explore the rise of English nationalism.

The government has decreed that henceforth all public buildings in Britain should fly the Union flag and ministers giving interviews are now required to have the flag displayed tastefully in the background. How do we account for this sudden outbreak of flag-waving? Evidence of a new found self-confidence or a sign that we are becoming more insular?

Chris Mullin was the MP for Sunderland South from 1987 to 2010. He is the author of four novels, including A Very British, Coup which was later adapted for television, and its sequel The Friends of Harry Perkins.

This event will have Stagetext live captions.
