Join us for the launch of a booklet that celebrates the history of Black lives in northern England and uncovers a number of fascinating hidden histories in the process. It explores the presence and success of people of African descent in the North East and helps to dispel the myth that the North East is exclusively white and monocultural.
From Galba, an enslaved person who was brought to work for Sir William Blackett of Wallington in Northumberland in 1727, to 19th century Cumbrian John Kent who was believed to be Britain’s first black policeman, to 21st century Newcastle MP Chinyelu ‘Chi’ Onwurah, this booklet reveals a rich and diverse history.
Beverley Prevatt Goldstein, editor and coordinator of the African Lives in Northern England Project, will be joined by Don O’Meara from Historic England, who have supported the project from its inception and Kath Boodhai from Northumbria University’s Multicultural Archive Project.
