Laura Bates: Girl Up

They told you to be beautiful, to wear longer skirts, to avoid going out late. They told you to use enough make-up to look presentable, but not enough to be slutty. They told you ‘see it as a compliment’. They warned that taking control meant being bossy, a ballbreaker. Laura Bates is here to say something different. Girl Up exposes the issues surrounding, among other areas, media representation, body image, sex and relationships,
and social media.

Laura Bates is a freelance journalist, founder of the Everyday Sexism project and an award-winning campaigner – we’re delighted to welcome her back to the Durham Book Festival.
