David Almond: The Books That Made Me

Join us in celebrating David Almond’s work in this special Big Read event, for all ages. David will talk about some of the books
that have been most important to him throughout his life, as well as sharing his perspective on some of the stories that make up Half a Creature from the Sea.

David Almond was born in Newcastle
upon Tyne in 1951 and grew up in the small mining town of Felling. His first book Skellig was published in 1998; it won the Carnegie Medal and was produced as a play by the National Theatre. David’s other books include, The Fire Eaters, My Name is Mina, A Song for Ella Grey and The True Tale of the Monster Billy Dean. His work is translated in more than 20 languages and in 2010 he was the recipient of the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award.

The Other Half

Taking a leaf from David Almond’s Half a Creature from the Sea, the community of East Durham were invited to share their own stories of childhood. Three have been committed to film in the authors’ own words.
