Durham Cathedral

All areas of the Cathedral used by Durham Book Festival are accessible by ramps and enclosed platform lifts.

The Cathedral itself is situated at the top of a steep hill. There is no general public parking close to the Cathedral but there is very limited parking behind the Cathedral that may be available to single vehicles displaying a disabled badge. This is unable to be reserved and only available on a first come first served basis.

Durham Cathedral Bus runs regular buses to the Cathedral from the train station and bus station. Durham City Shopmoblity provides battery-operated scooters and a minibus service to the Cathedral. For more information please visit the Durham Catherdral website.

Claypath Delicatessen

Claypath Deli is at ground floor level. The front entrance is almost fully accessible, with one small step approximately four inches high. The Deli does not have toilet facilities accessible to wheelchair users.

Clayport Library

Durham Clayport Library is accessible for disabled visitors with public lifts, accessible toilets, and a loop system installed.

The Walkergate multi-storey car park is located within 60 metres of the library. For more information please visit the Clayport Library website.

Durham Town Hall

Durham Town Hall has an accessible entrance. It is equipped with a lift, accessible toilets, and a fixed loop system.

The venue does not have its own car park but the Prince Bishops public use car park is located within 200m of the venue. For more detailed access information please see this access guide.

Empty Shop HQ

Empty Shop HQ is an upstairs unit, which unfortunately is not wheelchair accessible.

Empty Shop TESTT Space

TESTT Space is a temporary visual arts hub located above Durham Bus Station. The premises are located up two flights of stairs and are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Gala Theatre

Gala Theatre has lifts to all levels and accessible toilets located throughout. The Main Auditorium has wheelchair spaces available. If you will require a wheelchair space please advise the Box Office when booking. We ask that our wheelchair-using patrons attend with an able-bodied companion whose ticket is free of charge.

Guide Dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre. An infrared amplification system is operated in the Main Auditorium and headsets for the hard of hearing are available at Box Office. For any more information please visit the Gala website.

Palace Green Library

All areas of Palace Green Library used by Durham Book Festival are fully accessible via platform lift. There is also access to reception, the gift shop and accessible toilets. A portable hearing loop is also available.

Visitor parking is not available on Palace Green, but exceptions may be made for disabled customers and those with limited mobility. Durham Cathedral Bus stops directly outside the entrance to Palace Green Library, running from the train and bus station. Durham City Shopmobility also provides Electric scooters, manual and powered wheelchairs. For more information please visit the Palace Green Library website.
